Towards a better understanding of granular flows

Understanding the transport of particles immersed in a carrier fluid (bedload transport) is still an exciting challenge. Among different types gas–solid flows, when dynamics solid essentially dominated by collisions between them, kinetic theory can be considered as reliable tool to derive continuum approaches from fundamental point view. In recent paper, Chassagne et al. ( J. Fluid Mech. , vol. 964, 2023, A27) proposed two-fluid model based on modifications classical (Garzó & Dufty, Phys. Rev. E, 59, 1999, pp. 5895–5911). First, contrast model, takes into account interparticle friction not only radial distribution function but also through effective restitution coefficient rate dissipation term granular temperature. As second modification, at top bed where volume fraction quite small, accounts for saltation regime framework. The theoretical results derived agree with discrete simulations moderate and high densities they are consistent experiments. Thus, helps provide better understanding combined impact inelasticity macroscopic properties flows.
